Everything you always wanted to know about the history of healthcare, but were too afraid to ask is a book about development of medicine. Two hundred years ago operations were very painful, the patient, who was undergoing a surgery, suffered a lot. People tried to anaesthetize with alcohol, which was dangerous, because it increases bleeding. The first anaesthesia was nitrous oxide, now called laughing gas. It was believed, that this substance is harmful for people, but H. David discovered that it is untrue.

People started to use nitrous oxide as an anaesthesia after Horace Wells discovered its qualities. He went to a show, where that substance was presented. During the performance one man got seriously hurt, but felt no pain. He was very surprised, that such an accident happened to him. After that discovery Horace Wells, who was a dentist, tried to use it during taking patient’s tooth out. It wasn’t successful, because he didn’t use sufficient amount of nitrous oxide.

Are we too obsesed with fitness?

Majority of people on television and in magazines are fit and slim. Healthy lifestyle is propagated at every turn. I think that people have become too obsessed with fitness. For many of them being fit is the most important thing in life. They spend hours in the gym, even though they don’t like it at all. Care about figure and weight often causes serious illnesses like anorexia. It affects people, who want to be to ideal and slim. They resign from their hobbies and spend every free minute in a swimming pool or a gym.

Obviously we should care about our health and condition, but it shouldn’t become a main goal in life. People should treat sport as a way to feel better and happier. Everything should be done in moderation.

Activities in free time

Ordinarily we can’t do whatever we want, but that, what we are supposed to. If I could choose an activity to do it would be a trip to a different country. I love travelling, seeing new places and meeting other people, it gives me most pleasure. I would be the most content, if it was a warm place near sea. We do not have a possibility to travel very often because of school or work.

A dinner in an expensive restaurant with friends is also a great idea. Tasty meal always puts people in a good mood. It is a wonderful possibility to discuss about interesting topics, tell a joke and laugh. The greatest thing is that nobody has to hurry, everybody is relaxed and glad.

I would be very upset if I had to go fishing. For me it is the most boring activity ever. I really can not understand people who wake up at 4 am just to sit couple of hours by the river. There is no possibility to talk with other people, because any noise could scare away fish.

Having your own business – advantages and disadvantages

Many people dream of becoming a famous and rich entrepreneur like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. Lots of them want to work without a despotic boss, who says them what to do. Unfortunately the reality doesn’t look so beautiful – having own business has not only advantages, but also disadvantages.

The first argument, which can convince people to set up their own business is independence. Being a creator of the company enables us to decide about workers, working hours without being criticized by anyone.

Own business is a great possibility to make a career. If we call the shots wisely the company can be a huge success. As a result the boss becomes famous and extremely rich, his face is on the cover of Forbes magazine.

On the other hand it is connected with a huge responsibility. As a boss you have always think about what is the best for your company. Very often it is connected with staying long at work, even at night, having no time for your wife and children. It is very hard to find a while for a rest, life is full of stress.

In addition having an own company is very risky. Many companies go bankrupt because of some mistakes or market’s changes. An entrepreneur is subject to every crisis, and can never be sure whether he will be successful or not.

In conclusion setting up the company can make us billionaires or bankrupt. Everybody, who wants to become an entrepreneur has to consider, if he wants to live in a constant stress or have a quiet life working for somebody else.

Sexual discrimination

Nowadays there are many organisations, which help people, who think that they are discriminated because of their sex. It is very common that women can not work for example as a fire fighter, because traditionally only men were able to do it. There are many touching cases about sexual discrimination.

First story is about a woman, who got pregnant. When she informed her boss about it, she heard that she let him down. When she came back to work after maternity leave she had to work in a junior position. The Equal Opportunities Commission was very supportive. Because of their financial help the fight with a chef was possible.

Sexual discrimination is not only women’s problem. Another discriminated person was a man, who worked in the late '70 during his summer holidays as a secretary. His boss dismissed him, because he thought, that female secretary will be better for the company’s image. The man didn’t realize that he was affected by sexual discrimination. Now he regrets that he didn't take his case to the Employment Tribunal and defend his rights.

Equality in relationship

Being in relationship is extremely complicated. A key to success is equality. It is hard to reach, because of huge differences between men and women. Many people consider if a man should be the only one, who earns money and woman a housekeeper.

For me the answer is not simple. It all depends on a relationship. First of all we should respect other person’s dreams and wishes. There is no rule, that wife should raise children and cook. Some women feel happy and fulfilled sitting at home and taking care of children, other want to make a career and earn a lot of money. In a relationship people should care about each other and make compromises.

Housework should be fairly divided. Some activities, which need strength can be done by a man, but if woman likes doing it, she should also have such possibility. On the other hand man should participate in typical wife’s work, like washing or cooking.

To sum up, people should be honest which each other and do as much as it is possible to help each other. It is very important, that partners talk about their roles in relationship. Equality doesn’t mean, that both people do the same things, but that both of them are happy with their duties.

Career success

Nowadays  it is very hard to be a successful businessman. Some people have more capacities to have great achievements in a company, for other it is much more difficult.

I think, that the most important factor is financial backing. Money allow us setting up our own company and developing it. They also give us credibility, so other investors want  to cooperate with us. Moreover we can afford prestige studies and courses, get many useful skills and become a well-educated worker.

Secondly, I think, that well-rounded education is also very important. It makes a wonderful impression on an employer, if you have finished a famous business college. Huge knowledge allows you working as a manager and ordain other people. You are respected and important.

Result of work is much better, when people in company cooperate. Other people probable have different competences than you do and can help you. Many projects need to be done in a group, because of big amount of work. Teamwork causes advantages for everybody.

Furthermore ability to delegate is also an important factor. You cannot participate in business trips if you have small or ill children. Delegations give you many opportunities to educate and get to know other people, who can help you in your career or recommend you to another employer.

Fifth feature you need to have is charisma, which helps you to convince people to realise your ideas. Employers rate energetic workers, who are creative and can make other work more active. People, who become a leader in a group often get promotion, usually to a senior position.

What is more you should enjoy challenges. Work cannot be just an obligation for you. You should be really interested in what are you doing and have fun with it. It makes work more exciting an effective, less tiring and boring. Your job should also be your passion.

For me those are the most important factors to achieve a success. In fact, if you do your best to make a career you have huge chances. A recipe for being a respected worker is mixture of many features and talents.

Snowbone

Paddy is a young man, who wants to set up a business. He tries to market a new invention - snowbone. This is a kind of equipment, which you can use for winter sport. It is a snowboard with handlebars and fork of the bike. Snowbone was designed by Nick - an industrial designer and Paddy's friend. It is primarily targeted at people in the 16 - 25 age range, who like extreme sports.

Entrepreneurs checked their target market. They found out, that 1,5 millions of snowboards are sold every year, so they thought, that there will be customers for their products. Paddy, as a business student, put together a business plan with his goals and the strategy. After the course, Paddy devoted all his energies to the snowbone.

Then, in order to secure their financial backing, men appeared as contestants on the BBC television series Dragons' Den. This is a television programme, where people try to convenience wealthy businessmen to invest in their company. Paddy and Nick went to audition and underwent selection to the show. Then, when they were about to eat lunch, they had to pitch their idea to the investors. Every of them had a pitch of money next to him. Filming went really good, because they knew their product, but took long time. Dragons needed time to understand the idea. Entrepreneurs asked them lots of questions. It was very nerve wrecking. One American chap was interested, but in the end he resigned. Rachel Elnaugh took to Paddy and Nick. She asked how much were they after. After negotiation she invested 25000 pounds.

For those money Nick and Paddy did marketing developing, for example creating a logo and website. Because of Rachel's help they they had credibility and people believed, that their plans are serious. Unfortunately the deal with Rachel was not finished, only some costs were covered.

Now young entrepreneurs are waiting for answer from Taiwan. There is a manufacture, where they could produce snowbones. Paddy is an optimist and hopes, that his company will be a huge success.

Is it better to have your own company or work for somebody else?

Many people can not make a decision whether they should set up their own company or work for another people. For me the answer is simple. It is good to be employed in somebody else's company at the beginning to collect experiences and capital. It is much better to earn some money for start, than take a huge loan. During working for some time for someone we can learn from experts the tricks of the business. I think it is very irresponsible to invest money without any knowledge of having an own firm.

After that, when we know something about market, we can set up a company, what enables us to decide about everything. It is easier to make our dreams come true. We avoid routine and wasting time, work is more effective when we understand, that whatever we earn belongs to us. Responsibility for ourselves makes us more energetic, creative and scrupulous. In my opinion the fact, that created a company, which brings us a profit, gives huge satisfaction and happiness.

To sum up, if you are not experienced enough, you should not set up a company. But when you have knowledge and money needed to create a business, you should definitely try being your own chief.
